AI replaces artists at Marvel

Good morning, welcome to AI Joe, the newsletter that’s wilder than spring break on Daytona Beach!

Via Giphy

Here’s what’s on today’s agenda 👇️

  • New Marvel show uses AI to create intro 👽️

  • YouTube is getting AI Dubbing ▶️

  • Sony Hires Executive VP of AI 👨‍💼

  • A Tour of OpenAI 📺️

  • Create videos with AI Voiceovers on Fliki 🎦

New Marvel show uses Midjourney images for intro sequence… and it’s not going over well

The new Marvel show on Disney+ is creating quite a stir, but not for the reason you’d think. Secret Invasion, a show about shape-shifting aliens who have invaded Earth, used Midjourney images to create an ominous intro.

So What’s the issue?

Many critics are frustrated that Disney chose to use AI and claim that artists could and should have been used instead. Director Ali Selim told reporters that the decision was artistic and he believed the AI-generated images fit well with the theme of the show.

This comes at a particularly controversial time because the WGA (Writers’ Guild of America) is currently on strike to prevent AI from being used in the writing process for shows and movies.

Many people believed that AI would first be used to solve repetitive blue-collar jobs. They believed this would happen long before AI came to white-collar jobs. Most people believed the only jobs safe from AI would be roles that required human creativity. In reality, the reverse is true, AI has come for creative jobs, making them faster and less expensive to complete while blue-collar roles are largely untouched.

What Joe’s thinking about:

Is AI-generated art, prompted by a human, really different from art as we know it today? Did animators who drew images to create cartoons feel this way when animation started on computers? Is creating a prompt to express yourself not a form of art?

I think generative AI might just be a new platform for art, if the generations are masterful, likely the artist behind the prompts was masterful too.

YouTube to Launch AI Dubbing Service 🗣️

In collaboration with Aloud, an AI dubbing platform created in a Google tech incubator, YouTube is making it easy for creators to reach people in their native language across the world.

How’s it work?

Aloud uses a 3 step process to translate and dub videos for creators.

  1. AI creates a transcription of the video in its original language

  2. The creator reviews and edits the transcription for accuracy

  3. Aloud’s AI translates the text, generates audio, and syncs it to the existing video

This will make launching secondary and tertiary channels much easier for creators and create a lot more content that is multilingual.

Joe’s Takeaway:

Maybe this will help people better understand perspectives from around the world. This has the power to change perceptions people have of others who don’t speak their language or share their culture. I hope this brings the world closer together.

Sony Music hires EVP of AI - will this become the norm? 👨‍💼

Geoff Taylor Via Sony Music

The music industry is taking a proactive approach to AI. Unlike streaming in the 2010s, rather than try to shut down AI’s influence on music, firms like Sony are embracing it.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great significance for the future of the music industry and, as a result, more focused attention on it is required.

Accordingly, we are delighted to share that Geoff Taylor will be joining us as our new Executive Vice President, Artificial Intelligence.

Kevin Kelleher, COO, Sony Music

Taylor’s role will focus on how AI can help Sony artists and how Sony can protect artists from AI simultaneously. His legal background will help him think about how copyright and licensing will need to work in this new world of AI music.

Joe’s Takeaway:

I think other record labels will follow suit as it becomes clear that AI is impacting music. What’s more interesting is to see what other industries will follow suit. Who will be proactive and who will fall behind?

Inside OpenAI - a look into the firm that created ChatGPT and Dall-E 👀

The interview features two important figures in the world of AI. Mira Marathi, OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, and Reid Hoffman, an OpenAI early investor and founder of LinkedIn. They cover a wide range of topics, here are a few of the highlights 👇️

  • Hallucination, truthfulness, reliability, and alignment are some of the biggest challenges they’re solving at OpenAI right now.

  • They are solving “impossible problems” and required systematic ways for employees to raise concerns

  • They launched to the public because they thought it would be useful to get more feedback. They were shocked at how fast it caught on.

  • Communication will become a hybrid of human and AI as systems become more reliable.

  • AI will eliminate jobs but will create others. Prompt engineering has become an important and highly-paid job already.

  • The speed we integrate AI into our lives will be faster than smartphones

  • Every job will have a copilot AI system

  • AI is not meant to replace humans, it’s meant to enable them

  • AI is not yet on the cutting edge of any industry - not an expert

  • There will be 1-3 big new companies that emerge from AI disruption

Joe’s Takeaway:

Experts in the field are cautious, but overall much more optimistic about the possibilities of AI than concerned about the risks. I too am optimistic that AI will lead to a brighter future!
