Apple teases AppleGPT as it joins the AI Race š
Apple throws its hat in the ring as rumors swirl that they are quietly working on their own large language model.
Via Giphy
This could be a GAME-CHANGER when you consider Appleās dominance in the hardware space. iPhones, iPads and Macbooks are everywhere. If Apple can get this right, it could quickly become the most widely used large language model.
According to reports, the large language model is nicknamed āAjaxā (short for Apple Jacks) internally. There is also a project focused on chat, similar to ChatGPT which is known as AppleGPT. This project is reportedly picking up steam as Apple adds more resources to make sure they arenāt falling behind.
Apple is known widely for taking existing products, like smartphones, and introducing better versions that take over the market. The iPod wasnāt the first MP3 player, but it was the best one, the iPhone wasnāt the first smartphone, but it was the best, the Macbook wasnāt the first laptop, but it was the best.
No doubt, even though AppleGPT wasnāt the first LLM, you can rest assured Apple will strive to make it the best.
Joeās Takeaway: Apple entering the market gives it even more legitimacy. It also turns up the heat on the competition. Apple typically has the products with the best customer experience, the most beautiful interface, and the least friction for consumers. Bringing their own GPT to the market will take it from hundreds of millions of users to billions. Keep an eye out for more formal news about this one!
Top AI firms agree to safeguards with the White House šŗšø
Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI have agreed to voluntary safety checks on all new releases of their AI models. This represents by far the largest players in the space and is the first step toward regulating the technology.
Via Giphy
Some might argue that the government isnāt sophisticated enough to effectively audit the technology. To this point, there has been no announcement of who will audit the technology and how theyāll keep these companies accountable.
We must be clear eyed and vigilant about the threats emerging technologies can pose to ensure their products are safe.
The audits will focus on potential harms including, but not limited to:
Biosecurity
Cybersecurity
Bias and discrimination
Ability to self-replicate
The companies have also committed to watermarking AI images to distinguish them from real images.
Joeās Takeaway: By agreeing to (and likely helping create) these rules, the companies involved are creating a framework for regulation. The more stringent the regulations get, the more expensive and difficult they become to comply with. This gives large firms that have a āhead startā a way to prevent competition from entering the market. This regulatory capture in the name of fear is one of the most effective tactics these firms can use to solidify themselves as the āonly games in town.ā

Google launches AI journalist āGenesisā š°
According to an article from The New York Times, Google is pitching new technology to large media companies like The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
via Giphy
The new technology, known internally as āGenesisā leverages AI to write news stories. Google pitched this technology as a way to help human writers save time and streamline processes. The news organizations however had mixed feelings.
Some executives were uncomfortable with the technology stating they felt Google took the work that goes into writing an accurate and compelling story for granted. Others felt that if the technology could reliably produce precise information, it could be a boon for journalist productivity.
Joeās Takeaway: Journalism is an interesting area because it is such a vital part of the dissemination of information. If AI canāt be 100% accurate, allowing it into the journalism world is dangerous. With that said, itās inevitable that eventually AI will be a part of a journalistās process and as it becomes more effective, it will become more widely adopted. Journalists may shift their time away from writing and toward fact-checking and editing. Time will tell, but this is an area that is important to get right!
Satya Nadella uses keynote to talk AI š šµ
Here are some of the key points from the keynote:
AI will change the computer interface
Natural language will be the new way we interact with computers
A reasoning engine will make all your data more useful
AI will grow GDP by approximately 10%
Everything we do digitally will have an AI assistant to make humans more efficient
Demos:
Demo of Bing Chat Enterprise
Demo of Microsoft 365 Copilot
Demo of AI Studio on Azure
Joeās Takeaway: AI integration into digital products and ecosystems is happening quickly. As AI models access more data on local devices and start to recognize patterns in day-to-day workflows they will become much more useful. This platform shift will have a massive impact on work for all āknowledge workersā within the next 12-24 months.
