Beatles releasing new music using AI

Good morning and welcome to AI Joe, the newsletter that’s more legendary than Barney Stinson!

This is the midweek mini edition where we provide a top story and a prompt for ChatGPT.

Here’s what’s on today’s agenda

  • Paul McCartney and AI “Come Together”🪲

  • Interview your heroes with this prompt 🦸

AI is Helping to Bring John Lennon Back From the Dead 🧘‍♂️

No need to “Let It Be,” thanks to AI technology we’re getting a brand new song from the Beatles featuring John Lennon’s voice from 1978.

The song, which Paul McCartney says will be the Beatles’ “final song,” was recorded on an old cassette shortly before John Lennon’s death. The Beatles tried to release this record in the past but were unable to because of the poor quality of the recording.

When Lennon recorded the track, he had music playing in the background. This is typical when artists record ideas for songs they plan to record in a studio someday. Unfortunately, John was never able to record the song in a studio. The quality and format of the recording meant it was nearly impossible to isolate Lennon’s vocals.

Enter AI

Thanks to new AI technology they were finally able to isolate the voice. This allowed them to use it like vocals recorded in the studio. The AI was trained to identify Lennon’s voice, which made it possible to pull it out from the music.

Just like AI is used on images to identify and remove things like a background or an unwanted photobomber, it can be used on audio to remove background noise or an unwelcome interruption.

“We had John’s voice and a piano and he could separate them with AI. They tell the machine: ‘That’s the voice. This is a guitar. Lose the guitar.’ So when we came to make what will be the last Beatles record, it was a demo that John had and we were able to take John’s voice and get it pure through this AI. Then we can mix the record, as you would normally do. So it gives you some sort of leeway.”

Joe’s Takeaway: Though some artists are fighting it, legends of the industry are embracing AI. This is an early step toward normalizing AI in music. While I think it will take a while, AI will have a massive impact on the artists we listen to, the music they create, and the way we consume music. I’m just excited to watch it play out!
