What’s an NPC?

Have you ever played a video game? If so, you’ll know there are typically characters you can converse with that aren’t playing. When you interact with them, they can only repeat one thing over and over. If you’ve seen the 2021 movie Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds, his character was meant to be an NPC that “broke free.” *queue Breaking Free by the cast of High School Musical

Now that you’re up to date, more about the NVIDIA demo

NVIDIA revealed ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine), a technology that will allow game players to have real conversations with NPCs.

Now video game creators can:

• Create richer characters

• Create more complex worlds

• Make games even more immersive

• Hide “easter eggs” (hidden messages) behind NPCs

• Give NPCs memory so you can converse about shared experiences

• Make it so no 2 players ever have the same experience within the game

Technology often starts with video games, but this will be applicable in many other ways. The first that comes to mind for me is training professionals to do their jobs.
